Update on Selecting the Winners of the Name the Turtle Contest

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Many thanks to all of you who took the time to send in such thoughtful and fun suggestions for a name for [Turtle]! Yesterday was spent tabulating the results and winnowing them down to a manageable number for the judges. All the necessary background and information will go out to the panel today.

In the end, we had entries from all over this country and from Canada and England. A wide range of people entered, from moms with toddlers to grandparents, aunties and family friends. Many included suggestions directly from the mouths of the child him/herself, always inventive and always fun to read. I wish we had more than one [Turtle] to name!

While the judges decide, we’ll be preparing for the announcement of the winners, which will happen in mid-September. Of course, we will keep you posted about the exact date.

In the meantime, we’re also planning our next themes — most likely beginning with a penguin, perhaps the penguin who first appears in the Dapper Dan the Snowman Storybook Quilt.

Name the Turtle Contest: 26-Days-Left Update

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

The summer, and the time left in the contest, are whizzing by! Thinking of names for [Turtle] can be done anywhere — sitting by the pool, washing the car, driving to work, putting away groceries, walking the dog . . . Involve the children in your life, too, whether you’re a mom, dad, grandparent, auntie, uncle or close family friend. Print out the pictures of the quilt and read the story line and enjoy the incredibly creative thoughts that pop out of a child’s mind.

Entries have arrived from all over the country. New England leads the way, so far, in the number of entries, accounting for half of them! Is this a challenge to other areas of the country? And what about you Canada, Australia, “Old” England and, well, the rest of the world?!

We are delighted to now have a full panel of 11 exceptional judges. It’s a very interesting group. Represented are parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles; we have a wide range of entrepreneurs, including a dynamite talk show host, the energetic founders of networking organizations for Boomer women and for aunties, an innovative pediatrician, a savvy counselor, an insightful editor, the dedicated creator of a website for goods made in the USA, and the influential founder of a leading DC communications consultancy. I urge you to visit the links on the right of the page to learn more about these inspiring people and their work.

Want to Win [Turtle]? Gotta Get Past Grandma!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Grandmas, some more than others, all have PhDs in children — Pretty Heavy Doting. OK, so you could think of something better. (Tell me!) Grandmas certainly have read their share of stories. I suspect if you could tap a grandma’s brain, you’d find miles and miles of neurons with stories recorded!

To win the [Turtle] contest, you’ll have to satisfy many miles of grandma and grandpa neurons, including those of the newest members of the judges panel.
