What keeps you in your grandchild’s thoughts?

In today’s world, grandparents and grandchildren all too often live quite a distance from one another. Is this true of you? How can that distance be overcome?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re keeping in contact using e-mail and possibly also Facebook. Maybe you have a webcam and mic so that you can see and hear one another “live”! Maybe you send things back and forth in the mail – cards or gifts or photos.

Is there something very special that you share that keeps you in your grandchild’s thoughts? Is it something that your grandchild will still have when he or she is a grandparent?

A Storybook Quilt can be the tie — and last for a lifetime. The quilt can be customized with a short message, names and dates.

The book can include a longer message from you and a photo – and even be specially rewritten to include family details in the story itself.

6 Steps to Creating the Winning Story

Time is speeding by! The April 21st deadline for the Tell a Story Contest is closing in. Have you started making up your story yet?

Below are the six steps that we use to write our stories. Maybe they will help you, too.

1. Give a name to the character you pick. It’s easier to make up a story about something that has a name.

2. Look at the pictures of the fabrics. Imagine your character talking to or having an adventure with what’s in the fabric. For example, let’s say the frog wins the jumping contest but ends up on the train by mistake and the train starts to move!

3. Pick more of the fabrics and do the same thing. For example, say the fairy grants the frog three wishes – what three fabrics would make a great story about that? (Now you’re up to five fabrics – you need at least seven, so only two more to go!)

4. Cut out the pictures of the fabrics you have chosen and arrange them in a line. Try to tell the story. Rearrange the pictures until you get a story you like.

5. Think of a fun ending – a surprise always is good or an ending that makes the listener wonder. At the end of our frog story, the listener has to decide whether Winnie the Frog was a really a frog — or a boy.

6. Stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself the story. Or tell someone else. Or have someone make a video. This is a great way to find out if you would like to change anything.

Then it’s up to you whether you want to enter the contest with a video or a written story.

Remember: Nothing has to be perfect; the idea is to use your imagination and have fun doing it!

Name the Turtle Contest: 26-Days-Left Update

The summer, and the time left in the contest, are whizzing by! Thinking of names for [Turtle] can be done anywhere — sitting by the pool, washing the car, driving to work, putting away groceries, walking the dog . . . Involve the children in your life, too, whether you’re a mom, dad, grandparent, auntie, uncle or close family friend. Print out the pictures of the quilt and read the story line and enjoy the incredibly creative thoughts that pop out of a child’s mind.

Entries have arrived from all over the country. New England leads the way, so far, in the number of entries, accounting for half of them! Is this a challenge to other areas of the country? And what about you Canada, Australia, “Old” England and, well, the rest of the world?!

We are delighted to now have a full panel of 11 exceptional judges. It’s a very interesting group. Represented are parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles; we have a wide range of entrepreneurs, including a dynamite talk show host, the energetic founders of networking organizations for Boomer women and for aunties, an innovative pediatrician, a savvy counselor, an insightful editor, the dedicated creator of a website for goods made in the USA, and the influential founder of a leading DC communications consultancy.
